4th December Cookie Day
The English word “cookie” comes from the Dutch word “koekje,” which means a little cake. Dutch bakers used to test oven temperatures on small amounts of dough, so they discovered that these tiny pieces of baked mixture were very tasty indeed. The origin of the cookie seems to begin in Persia, during the 7th century, soon after the use of sugar had become common in the region and then spread to Europe and the rest of the world.
Nowadays it can be enjoyable to take the time baking cookies together. We make it a yearly tradition and the children can’t wait for it!
Not only will you get to spend time bonding with your child, but you will also teach them many valuable life skills. Teamwork, basic mathematical skills, importance of patience, creativity, sharing skills, reading skills and cleaning up skills.
But the most important thing is to spend quality time with your child!
And the reward that will come out of baking together is a variety of delicious cookies!
Have fun with our easy, kid-friendly recipe. It’s simple to make and fun to decorate for any age! With the Bakery set (with 13 different parts) it is guaranteed to bring hours of fun!
Ingredients:
- 300 g all-purpose flour
- 100g Powder-sugar
- 1 pack vanilla-sugar
- 200g cool butter
- ½ teaspoon bio-lemon zest
- 1/4 cup coarse sugar or sprinkles
- Parchment paper/ Baking paper
- A pinch of salt
Mix the Dough Together:
In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or with a spoon, mix the flour & powder sugar with the lemon-zest & a pinch of salt. Add into it the the butter (pieces). Cut everything with a knife in little pieces and mix it with your hands or with the stand mixer until combined and smooth, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as necessary.
Refrigerate the Dough:
Wrap the dough in a plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 2 days.
Prep the Baking Sheet:
When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C circulating air). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Cut out & Bake:
Remove the cookie dough from the refrigerator, unwrap, and slice each log into 1/4 balls. Roll out the dough on a clean floured surface 3-4mm thick. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters; arrange them on the prepared baking sheet 1,5 cm apart. Allow the little ones to play with the dough and be creative. Bake for 10–14 minutes, until the edges are golden brown. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 3 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat this step another 3 times.
To bake together is a big hit – the little one’s love playing with the dough!
Don’t Burn the Cookies! Take them out when the edges are golden brown. The cookies will finish baking on the warm pan and solidify as they cool.
Store & Freeze:
Store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days. I doubt they will exist that long! Freeze your butter cookies in an airtight container, or freezer bag, for up to 3 months.
Happy Cookie-Day!!
