How to care for Merinowool
If you own a Merinowool product you already discover the power of merino wool. HVID has chosen this yarn for its versatility and softness as well for its amazing properties. Likewise is it known for its sustainable quality which will last for a very long time. Merinowool is easy to maintain, because it doesn’t need much or any washing. Following we collected for you some information about its properties and how to take care.
How to care
Great News, no prewash needed! Each Merinowool product has gone through washing already. People advise to prewash baby products, that’s because they are not washed yet (like cotton products).
It is not necessary to wash Merinowool frequently. You want to know one of its super powers? It is SELFCLEANING. The Merinowool fiber contains a natural fat called LANOLIN. This lanolin is ANTI-BACTERIAL and also acts as a natural soap when it comes in contact with moisture. It’s perfect to just AIR OUT in dawn (because of the humidity) or in the bathroom during or after shower. The moist air cleans your products. It really does!
Merinowool is odor-Repellent. Since bacteria play a major role in a sweat odor, you product will stay smelling fresh. Due to its fine structure, the wool repels bacteria and is therefore very easy to maintain. You can wash off STAINS like milk with a wet cloth. No need to wash the whole product. Merinowool doesn’t take in smells. This is useful, because there is no need to wash your item fast!
How to wash
WASH your product as LESS AS POSSIBLE. The more you wash it, the more lanolin goes out of the wool. That means the more often you wash your product, the less protection it has.
If you do need to wash, we recommend to Handwash and to use lukewarm water (MAX 20°) only with a few drops of an (organic) WOOL SOAP. Handwash means WASHING IT BY HAND. Wool is an animal fiber and therefor needs a WOOLSOAP. Cotton and linen are plant fibers and need a ‘normal’ washing product. We suggest to use a lanolin-containing detergent to preserve the natural properties of your product.
Wash wool carefully! Wool reacts to difference in temperature and rubbing. Immerse the product in the water while you gently wash the wool. Do not leave it in the water for too long! Don’t let it soak. The wool will shrink if you let it soak. Avoid temperature differences, use water of the same temperature for washing and rinsing. Place the product on a towel and roll gently the water out. Avoid twisting or squeezing. Let the product dry flat.
Washing in the machine is at one’s own risk, as we cannot guarantee the individual program settings on the washing machines. All Merinowool products are always washed in advance and thus get their correct shape. All SHRINKAGE that happens afterwards is due to WASHING INCORRECTLY.
Be aware that ‘delicate wash or handwash’ is not a wool-program. The product might shrink if you wash it on delicate program or handwash.
The most mistakes when washing in the machine:
- Washing with the wrong program, like the delicate wash instead of the wool wash program.
- Washing with too high speed or too hot. (It should be washed in low or non-spin, MAX 20°).
- Usage of a faulty detergent or too much detergent.
